So today, we are going to continue to explore the Getting Answers process. This whole series is based on my book, “Getting Answers.” I wrote this book because I wanted others to know HOW EASY IT IS TO GET ANSWERS! As I’ve said before, you absolutely do not have to be a professional psychic like me. ANYONE can do it.
The crux of it is this: when you ask questions—you get answers.
Last episode we discussed the first two steps. If you are just joining us—those steps are:
Step one: Align with the Highest. You can do this one of two ways. You start your process by saying an affirmation (out loud or in your mind), something like, “I only receive answers that serve my Highest Good. Or, you can align with the Highest by defining who you are asking—obviously you are going to pick the best, benevolent source you know. So whether you call that, Source, God, Goddess, Divine Benevolent Source, Highest Good, Highest Self—you use whatever words sing to you. You direct your inquiry to whatever name of source has the most resonance for you. That’s it. That’s the first step. You do this because you don’t want just ANY answer—you want the one that is in your highest good. It’s also your safety net for what comes next—getting the answer—it leaves out doubt and confusion when the answer that arises isn’t what you thought.
Step two: Ask a question. It seems really simple—and it is. But I have noticed over the years that it sometimes trips people up. You can catch up with the last two episodes (or my book) if you feel stumped here. But essentially you are looking for the thing or things in your life that you feel would make your life better—but that you don’t know how to accomplish. Then formulate a question around that. It seems stupid to say this again but trust me I’ve been through this process with many many people so— I’m going to remind you to make sure it’s a question—not a statement. I have a whole chapter called, “Getting to the Heart of What You Really Want to Know,” which will help you troubleshoot formulating your question.
In our last episode we discussed the secret ingredient of patience and what happens if what you ask for isn’t what is best for you. As usual, I tell lots of true stories about this so if you missed the last two episodes you are going to want to go back. Or, take the short cut and get a copy of my book, “Getting Answers: Using Your Intuition to Discover Your Best Life.” Or both.
So, what next? Well, there are four steps to the process. Two more to go. We’re going to dive into those today.
The third step in the process is “Receive Answers.” Simple right!? So let’s talk about this. You are in dialogue with the Universe/Spirit/Highest Good—whether you know this or not it is always true. This process is going to teach you that very clearly. So how do you get your answers? Here are some important things to know.
The steps is RECEIVE ANSWERS… not Track Down Answers. That doesn’t mean you won’t have to do some work or follow-through sometimes to make things to come to fruition. Like, for instance, if you decide you’d like a new job with health benefits—you can’t just come up with your question and then sit in your living room and expect things to come to you. You have to do your due diligence: reaching out to those you know, prepping your resume, some internet searching or informational interviews etc., looking for and answering some ads.
Remember when I told you about our babysitter disappearing in the middle of the winter in Episode 21? Well when that happened, of course I immediately formulated my question: Who is the BEST person to care for my daughter for a few hours a week while I work? I didn’t want just any person for the job—of course I wanted the BEST person—someone who was in line with our family values, someone who was capable and who would play with her and who my daughter would enjoy spending time with. After I wrote down my question though—I also followed up. I spoke with my friends who were mothers. I posted online that we were looking for someone. I followed up with any responses I got. None of them was just right. But, knowing I had already asked the question (and using the help of my friend Patience) I knew the answer WOULD show up—when the timing was right.
Remember, what I keep saying on repeat is that you ALWAYS get the answer to any question you ask, 100%. So after you do this for a time, this process, you know, from your own experience that it is true—so the asking of the question itself becomes soothing. It’s how you’ve sent out your beacon to the Universe saying, “Answer needed here!” So, I rearranged my work schedule, and kept following any leads that arose. Then, one day, the answer walked right in my front door and sat at my table for tea.
My girlfriend, Rachel, stopped by. I put on a pot of water for tea. She asked me what was going on with us. I told her of my babysitter quandary. She said, “Well when do you need someone?” I told her the days and hours I needed. Then she totally surprised me by saying, “I can do it!” It turns out, as she caught me up on her life, that a bunch of things were changing in her life. She had just decided to leave a job she didn’t love. She had cleared her schedule of several obligations and now had space in which to fill.
The thing I most remember about this time period of when Rachel watched my daughter was how whenever I would bop in the house from working in my studio, I would find these two, my daughter and Rachel, head-to-head like long-time girlfriends. They’d be sitting at our kitchen table having tea chatting away as if they weren’t adult and a two-year-old child, but two close friends who had known each other for ages. It was THE SWEETEST thing. The cutest vibe. And every time I was so grateful. Grateful for Rachel, grateful for my daughter’s experience, grateful for their connection—and of course, grateful for my question that brought it all together in the first place.
So, though sometimes, depending on your question, you do have to take some action—follow up or inquire in some way—your answer also ALWAYS comes to you while you were living your life. I was hanging out at home with my daughter when THE BEST babysitter for her walked in our door and volunteered herself for the job. I was right where I would’ve been naturally.
The universe knows this—it will get a hold of you! It will put the answer where YOU will be! So due diligence aside—in this step, you are not a bloodhound searching and sniffing for any answer you can find. You are simply an open vessel—waiting for the truth of the perfect thing to make itself known.

I’ve noticed that usually answers come in one of three ways. The first is what I call, The Obvious Answers. Once I had a business training come to me that way. I wish I could remember the exact phrase, but it was so many years ago now. In any case, I wrote down a question of something I needed to know how to do in order to run my business/classes better. Within a day I had an email from someone with THE EXACT words I used. Obviously, I followed that lead. And I ended up doing a day long business training that helped me understand the best way to structure my programs. That’s an example of the obvious answers.
The second way answers come is answers that have what I call a Signature of Spirit. These are really fun. What happens is that when Spirit is trying to present you with some important information your senses become altered in some way. Like a bunch of people in the room are talking but all but one voice fades away—the voice speaking the thing you need to hear.
I got the idea of starting my Intuition University that way—for doing the programs on using your intuition and/or managing your empathic ability. I was speaking to a client. We had just finished a reading. She said, “Whenever I speak with you I always feel so clear about what is in my Highest and best interest. But I want to know how to do this for myself—so that months down the road I can also have the same clarity of vision that I do when I’m with you.” Then, she said something that was amplified to me. She followed that statement up with, “You should start a program and teach others how to tune into their own guidance.” We were on the phone. But that last statement, especially the “You should start a program” was amplified to me in some way. I knew Spirit was speaking through her—guiding me with a suggestion that would suit me. I heard it loud and clear. That was the moment my Intuition University classes were born. I hung up the phone and wrote it down. Then I started contemplating, “How would I teach others to access their own innate knowing? What are the tools I use to keep my own intuition sharp and guiding me gracefully toward the best that life can offer me?” Sometime after that, the business training that I mentioned that led me to a structure that was perfect for my programs appeared.
Moments that have a signature of Spirit feel timeless, altered, heightened, special. When this happens to me, I know Great Spirit is trying to get my attention—it’s got some important information for me or the answer to a question I’ve been having.
One of my all time favorites is one I shared in my book:
At the time I had been considering leaving the island where I live and going to Europe for a time, Ireland specifically. Here is a passage from my book that describes this:
This [took place] not long after I had made the realization that I was looking for my soul family. As I thought about Ireland, I considered the possibility of going there for an extended visit—like six months to a year or something. I was playing with different ideas in my mind, considering what would be best for me overall and wondering how or if these ideas fit into finding my soul family. As I was telling my girlfriend about this one morning, I got my answer. In response to what I had just told her, she looked at me thoughtfully, cocked her head to one side, and then said, “It would be a mistake for you to think that anything you need is anywhere other than here.”
As she said those words, I heard them in what I sometimes call the voice-of-God tone. It wasn’t that my friend had changed her voice at all. But the words reverberated in my head, echoing throughout my whole body as though she’d spoken through a microphone. I felt like I had just heard the voice of the Divine, through the lips of my girlfriend Mary Kay.
The words were still resounding in my mind a half an hour later as I got in my car. Sitting in the driver’s seat, I spoke them out loud to myself for the first time. At that moment my back windshield wiper whirled to life. Now this might not have been significant except for the fact that it hadn’t worked for the last six months. I laughed out loud as the wiper thumped across the dry window like a dog’s wagging tail: You got the message! Yay! We’re so happy! Yes, EVERYTHING you need is RIGHT HERE. I could practically hear my spirit guides shout!
Like I said, your benevolent helpers—God, your Highest Self, whatever you want to call your version of the Highest—will use whatever means necessary to get through to you. Nothing, not even inanimate objects, is off limits!
Okay, so I got my answer in the fashion of a “Signature of Spirit.” When Mary Kay spoke those words, I heard them differently—they were amplified. They stood out. When or if this sense of timelessness takes you over – pay attention. Great Spirit/ Benevolent Source is trying to tell you something important.
Just a note: if Spirit is communicating with you through the use of inanimate objects, like my windshield wipers—they will always CONFIRM whatever has just been said or thought.

Here’s another one. Remember last episode when I told you that I had been asking a question about where or who is my life partner for a long time before I started dating my husband.
Well when he finally showed up, Spirit made very sure I could not miss him. That I absolutely knew that this was him. For starters people started asking us when we started dating—BEFORE we started dating. The first was at a party where my husband and I were just hanging out and chatting. Someone came up to us and said cheerily, “When did you two start dating!?” To which we responded— “We aren’t dating!” We were just enjoying each other’s company and laughing a lot together!
The second time my girlfriend Lynelle casually said, “You know Jason Culp is not dating anyone.” I remember saying to her, “And what does this have to do with me!?”
The third time was my (would-be) husband and I were out at a bar. I had just performed some stand-up comedy and we were again just hanging out chatting when another person approached us and said, “When did you two start dating!?” To which we again responded—"We aren’t.” Only this time, this person followed her statement up with, “Well you should be!” Then she went on for like a whole minute or more about how he and I should be a couple. Imagine us just awkwardly looking at her from our bar stools as she went on and on about how we were a match. “Trust me, I can see this. THIS is a match. You two should be dating!” she said, MORE THAN ONCE.
She went on so much that the next month when one of my good friends was throwing a huge 60th birthday party in the city and he insisted that I bring a date—even though he knew I had NO DATE. I thought of Jason Culp.
I called him up and asked him if he wanted to go with me.
THE FIRST TIME, and I mean THE MOMENT Jason put his arms around me at that party someone began to recite this poem, by James Broughton:
When the right thing comes along from two directions
and runs into itself in some improbable place
the collision can shatter mere dreams of affection
with the head-on reality of a bangup embrace.
Love is the always that life is made of
Love is the always hope of love
Though fancy may toy with a reckless pursuit
of dazzling encounters in faraway weather
there is no delight elsewhere that can substitute
for the everyday squeeze of here and together.
Love is the ever that life is made of
Love is the ever home of love
From summer to summer with kingsize caress
renewals grow sweeter than beds of whipped cream
so reaffirm firmly what began with a Yes
and praise the right thing that improved on the dream.
Love is the only that life is made of
Love is the only cure for love
This poem is called, “Always Ever And Only.” Like I said, It’s by James Broughton.
That night was THE BEST date I ever had. The Universe was VERY CLEAR to me! There were so many moments that had a signature of Spirit! I said, our courtship was like a romantic comedy script that no one would believe actually happened! Someone actually told us we looked like a Christmas card together that night at that party, and then pretended to take a snapshot of us on the dance floor! It makes me chuckle now to think of it—because we are a Christmas Card—us and our two kids—now. Except I’m not a person who ever sends Christmas Cards, but we do take holiday snapshots for a keepsake book we have!
Okay, so we are exploring Getting Answers here on the Own Your Intuition show.
The last way that answers come are the ones that you live your way into. Those are the answers that you sometimes don’t notice because they happen so effortlessly and easily. My favorite example of this happened to a student of mine. During her Own Your Intuition program with me, when we were studying the Getting Answers process she identified that what she really wanted that year (it was Spring) was a spectacular garden. Gardening had been a love of her life—but for the last several years she had given it up essentially, put it on hold to parent. But now her two daughters had flown the nest and she felt her love of growing reviving in her being. She was inspired to get out in the dirt again and this time make it awesome, instead of maybe the half-baked experience she had had for several years of gardening and parenting. So she asked a question about how she could make her garden spectacular this year. During class she detailed to us that what happened. It wasn’t a direct response—it wasn’t a gardening workshop that said, “Want to know how to make your garden spectacular this year?” It had no signature of Spirit. It actually looked like something else entirely. The yoga studio where she taught called and said, “You know if you want to take the summer off you can. We have so few students in the summer, so we just want you to know that if you want us to reshuffle and take you off the schedule for the season we can.” She said yes. Then another commitment fell away, and another, naturally and easefully almost without her knowing. What did she do with her time? You guessed it! She was in her garden. It took her telling us about it in class to realize that these seemingly unrelated calendar changes were actually the answer she had been craving. What she needed to make her garden shine was time. She had the know-how. Her answer was created by her living her way into it.
These kind of answers are the reason I like to write my questions down in my journal. Because it’s not always obvious as you are living into them that the Universe is responding to your question. Until you look back and you see—wow, this, this, and that happened which answered the question for me! It’s really fun.
Asking questions starts to reshape your life. It’s real-life magic.

So, what’s the final step? The last step in the process?
It is: ACT.
Nobody but you, not even Spirit, can make the decision to act on the advice that you receive. You have free will. It is a choice you must make for yourself. I remember once a client who was getting the message that she needed to go to massage school—but she wasn’t sure. She called me for a reading. I didn’t even know that she had been getting this message but when we talked about massage school I could see that this was really her only and BEST way forward. She was at that crux moment. I confirmed it was her best way. But she was terrified—of the investment, of how it would all work out, of the changes it would create in her life. I could tell that so much goodness hung on this next step for her—and that massage school in this case was the only way it was all going to happen. Still, knowing it was not enough. She knew it inside before she called me! She had to actually do it! And if she chose not to, I could see she would be leaving a whole lot of lovely and fulfilling experiences on the table—when she should have been enjoying their fruits.
If the answer you receive takes courage, remember you took the time to align with the highest good—this is where your answers are coming from. Acting on your answer sometimes takes courage—but only at first. That’s because the more you do this process the more you understand through your experience that you WIN when Spirit guides you—in ways beyond your wildest dreams. So, it becomes more like a few brave steps to get something REALLY good—even if it feels a little scary to start.
Sometimes your answers don’t require courage—but they do require you to act. It did not take courage to start dating my husband for example—it was just an obvious yes. I thought he was cute—he was super fun to be around—we got along just so wonderfully. But sometimes your answers do take you out on a limb—like they did with my leaving the house I love—which I spoke about last episode. Or starting a new program, or even starting to see clients as a professional psychic all those years ago. Fear can arise—and that’s okay. Moving through it is a secret ingredient I share in my book.
The other fun and delightful thing about this process is that when you start to act on your answers, you start to get more. Spirit, knowing you are paying attention, will give you more guidance as you go along. Sometimes before you even have to ask.
So, act, that’s the last step. Acting on your messages gets you results—it produces the thing you wanted and likely way better than you even thought of. If you don’t act on it—it’s all a moot point. Remember, because you’ve aligned with the highest, the answers you receive always add to, enhance or improve your life— but you have to act on the answers to actually receive the benefit—to become the Christmas Card so to speak in my sake! Or to build a life teaching others to understand, utilize, and trust their own inner wisdom to use another example from my life.

One: Align with the Highest

Minus some secret ingredients I talk about in the book, you’ve got everything you need to get the goods!
Before I wrap it up I want to talk briefly about something that may arise: the moments when you feel like no answer is presenting itself.
A few things about this:
One, that’s why you have your friend Patience. Two, in my experience, it usually comes down to timing of a thing– which you cannot control nor force. You won’t get information until the time is right for you to ACT. If you feel as though no answer is coming, in my experience it means 1-2 things– or both at the same time.
A. You do not need to know– at least not RIGHT NOW. Remember how I shared in the last episode how I always had this urge to drive into what would eventually be the house I shared with my husband and children but what was then my husband’s even though I didn’t know it or him. I didn’t need to know who or where he was UNTIL it was time. Then, the Universe made it CRYSTAL CLEAR that yes, I should be dating this man—that the right thing had come along from two directions, as the poem detailed. This directive was non-existent, until it wasn’t.
B. If you haven’t received an answer yet, if at all possible, do nothing. No action necessary. If you must make a decision, do so, but don’t be surprised if more or different information comes down the pike later. If it does, be flexible, and go with the change if another alternative reveals itself as better.
As Rainer Maria Rilke says:
I beg of you to have patience with everything unresolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves as if they were locked rooms or books written in a very foreign language. Don’t search for the answers, which could not be given to you now, because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without ever noticing it, live your way into the answer.
Trust me, you will.
Okay, I think this is VERY CLEAR, but all this information and more is available in my book, “Getting Answers: Using Your Intuition to Discover Your Best Life.” Over the last few weeks I’ve given you everything you need to know in order to get started and use the process yourself. Nonetheless the book exists! I even designed it for quick reference and/or people who don’t finish a whole book. At the end of every chapter is a bulleted list of all the vital details. Chapter 10 is actually a checklist – the short course– for when you get stuck or feel like you are.
There’s nothing like your own experience to show you this—in the meantime you can use mine. I’ve been doing this for years with positive results. I know it works. Now just do it!
